Bell launches 8Gbps fibre home internet in Ontario, Quebec… again

Bell said it’s making 8Gbps fibre home internet available in “select areas” of Ontario and Quebec.

In an email to MobileSyrup, Bell said its Pure Fibre internet would be available with symmetrical speeds of up to 8Gbps. Symmetrical speeds mean 8Gbps download and upload speeds, as opposed to different speeds like most home internet plans. Along with symmetrical speeds, the plan includes unlimited monthly usage and works with Bell’s Giga Hub, which supports Wi-Fi 6E.

Bell said the 8Gbps internet packages would be available for “residential customers in select areas of Ontario and Québec” and boasted it was the “fastest speeds available on the market today.” However, Bell didn’t specify which areas would gain access even after MobileSyrup asked for additional details — if the company does share more information, we’ll update this post.

Bell also updated its website to show the new 8Gbps plan alongside other internet offerings. The site has a ‘Check availability’ button, so if you live in Ontario or Quebec, you can check your address to see if you’re covered by the 8Gbps plan. I live in Hamilton, Ontario, but I didn’t have access to the new internet package at my home.

Below is a list of Bell’s current internet plans:

  • $160/mo 8Gbps
  • $120/mo 3Gbps (includes $20/mo credit for two years)
  • $110/mo 1.5Gbps (includes $20/mo credit for two years)
  • $100/mo 500Mbps (includes $10/mo credit for two years)
  • $90/mo 300Mbps (includes $10/mo credit for two years)
  • $70/mo 150Mbps (includes $25/mo credit for two years)
  • $60/mo 50Mbps (includes $25/mo credit for two years)

Oddly, Bell previously launched 8Gbps internet in parts of Toronto back in 2022, but in February 2024, it capped internet speeds to 3Gbps for new customers. However, existing 8Gbps customers were able to keep their plans.

MobileSyrup asked Bell for clarification on whether this 8Gbps announcement was a relaunch but did not receive an answer in time for publication.

Notably, Bell charged $145/mo (including a $10/mo credit) for its 8Gbps internet plan in 2024, so at least Bell managed to sneak a price increase in here.

Rogers also launched internet with 8Gbps symmetrical speeds in 2022 for select customers in Ontario, New Brunswick, and Newfoundland. However, when I checked the company’s website to compare its 8Gbps plan to Bell’s, I couldn’t find anything over 2.5Gbps. That plan was an ‘Ignite Flex’ bundle with TV and sports for $149.99/mo (including a $45/mo credit for 24 months).

You can find more about Bell’s home internet plans on the company’s website.
