Jan Schwieterman dead at 52: Good Burger star passes away after ‘aggressive’ cancer battle

Good Burger star Jan Schwieterman has tragically passed away at the age of 52.

The Nickelodeon actor, best known for his role as villain Kurt Bozwell in the 1997 comedy Good Burger, was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer shortly before his death.

He passed away at Mercy Hospital in Washington, Missouri, according to his obituary,

‘It is with a heavy heart that I share the passing of my brother, Jan (JP) Schwieterman,’ his brother Chad Schwieterman confirmed in a Facebook post. ‘He recently found out he had an aggressive form of stage 4 cancer.’

Family and friends described his passing as a ‘shock.’

‘Please keep our family in your thoughts and prayers as we navigate this difficult time. Rest in peace, brother. We love you and miss you,’ Chad added.

His obituary stated, ‘J.P. loved to travel. He has traveled to many countries throughout his life, most recently to Thailand. He was an artist of photography and painting. He studied martial arts and loved playing Dungeons and Dragons.’

Born in Bluffton, Indiana—about 35 miles south of Fort Wayne—Schwieterman was a ‘proud’ Eagle Scout before setting his sights on Hollywood. 

After high school, he headed to California to pursue his dream of acting.

He landed his first role in 1994 on the TV series McKenna, paving the way for guest appearances on popular shows of the era, including ER, Forever, NightMan, Undressed, and Felicity.

‘He was the lead villain in the movie ‘Good Burge’ playing the role of Kurt Bozwell owner of Mondo Burger,’ continued his obituary.

He starred alongside comedians Kenan Thompson and Kel Mitchell in the smash hit film based on the TV show. 

‘J.P. also had roles in the TV series McKenna and ER. In 2007 he returned in the movie Along the Way.’ 

In 2000, he starred in Fallen Arches before stepping away from acting for seven years.

He made his return in 2007, playing Michael Braga in Along the Way, which would ultimately be his final film credit.

Schwieterman’s funeral took place on March 4, with his family requesting that donations be made to the MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston in his honor.

He is survived by his parents, LeeRoy Schwieterman and Clara Reed, his siblings—Megan, Vanessa, and Chad—as well as a loving extended family of nieces, nephews, and cousins.

‘Thank you, everyone, for your support,’ his brother Chad wrote on Facebook. ‘We miss JP deeply and appreciate your thoughts and prayers.’
